Our Homes Exterior Paint Plan – These colors are Timeless!

Boy, do love a white home – inside and out! Lately, it is the color I have been selecting for many of my new builds and rehabs. But I decided I wanted something different for our family house, so I began considering other colors and landed on a beautiful light gray. I wanted it to feel fresh and clean, set the stage for our home's story, and highlight my love for classic modern design.

Body of the House: Sherwin Williams Mindful Gray (SW7016) – Flat
This is a beautiful mid-tone gray that is great for interiors and exteriors. There are no significant undertones making it a perfect neutral. It is a timeless color and about mid-range of Sherwin Williams many amazing gray paint choices.

Trim: Benjamin Moore Simply White (OC-117) – Flat
I could come up with a thousand words to describe this white paint. It is perfection! I absolutely love it! I have been using it for years when I switched over from Benjamin Moore's Decorators White. While Simply White lends itself to being a creamier, warm tone, it isn't too yellowish. It's a true white that makes all other colors it is paired with more beautiful. I often use it for both my interior and exterior trim, and lately, I've been loving it on walls. You can't go wrong with this one!

Front Door: Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black SW6258 – Semigloss
This is the only black paint you will ever need, and millions agree! This popular black paint is a favorite—the perfect color for doors and windows.

Now that you have some beautiful paint colors to consider, here is my preference on sheens.

  • Walls: Eggshell

  • Ceilings: Flat

  • Trim: Satin - Many designers/homeowners prefer semigloss. I like mine to be a little less shiny.

  • Front Door: Semigloss

A great exterior paint color can add real value to your home. When choosing your color, consider your home's style (modern or traditional), your neighbor's house color, your lighting (are you on a shady lot or do you have bright sunlight all day long), and what colors make you happy. Remember that neutrals allow you to showcase landscaping, outdoor furnishings, pots, etc. I am a huge fan!

When you are making your choice, it is a great idea to paint some samples on your home to see the color morning, noon, and night. It can definitely change your opinion. Remember to paint white primer on the house under the samples, so your current house color does not affect the sample paint color.

I know many homeowners are nervous about picking their house color as it is a big decision and a considerable expense. But by doing your homework and following your intuition, you will make a great choice. And if all else fails, feel free to reach out; I am happy to steer you in the right direction.

Happy painting!
